Teach your children to ALWAYS ask whether it’s ok to pet a dog. Even on leash, some dogs don’t react well to children and no noe wants to traumatize either the dog or the child!

If you’re expecting, take some time to prepare your dog. Many vets and training facilities offer a “Preparing for Baby” course for you & your dog. Set up the nursery as soon as possible & encourage your dog to epxlore the space. This way, he’s comfortable with the area well before a new baby is brought home!

Prepare your kids for the visit of a dog. Make sure they know that it’s startling to a dog to have his ears pulled, his tail yanked or to be shouted at in the face! Also instruct them not to feed the dog any table food or treats without the owner’s permission!

If you’re taking your dog home with you, make sure you’re both good guests! Bring everything your dog might need with you - don’t rely on your host to provide bowls, treats, a bed, etc. ANd bring a familiar blanket and some toys to make your dog feel at home.

If a dog will be visitng you for the holidays, do a little research before he arrives. Make sure you have the phone numbers & addresses of nearby vets and 24-hour animal hospitals.

Make an effort to keep your dog’s schedule as consistent as possible during busy holiday times. Often, the family dog gets lost in the shuffle with visitors, different schedules, etc. If in doubt, take the dog for that extra walk - it’s good for you & it’s good for your dog!

Beware little hands sneaking food to your dog! This time of year, it’s easy for your dog to gain a few pounds - just like it is for you! Monitor closely the extra treats your dog may be slipped by munchkin guests or over-eager little visitors! Also be aware of the extra treats YOU may be giving your dog in an effort to keep him calm & happy when visitors arrive. Compensate by feeding a bit less at each regular meal.
